ABOUT MISAWAYA

Kominka Misawaya (古民家 箕澤屋) is about 150 years old Japanese traditional house located in Inadani Nagano, Japan. "Kominka" is a general term for old houses in Japanese and "Misawaya" is the name of the house. The house was built in 1861, at the end of Edo period.
Traditional Japanese houses made by wood are difficult to preserve for a long time. Because there are a lot of earthquake in Japan and also wood is flammable, perishable depends on its condition.

In spite of that environment, Misawaya has survived for 150 years. It still has “Doma” entrance hall and “Iroi” fireplace which are very attractive traditional stuff. Once you step inside, you can feel Japanese culture and history from the house.

OUR STORY

No one has lived at Misawaya for last 40 years. However, neighbors thought the house is very important for this town and they should preserve it for the future generations. And then, they have been taking care of the house for the last 20 years.

In 2014, they told my family that it is going to be difficult to take care of the house for them anymore because they are too aged. The owner of the house was my family’s relatives. And we found out that we had to do something taking over from them.

In the beginning of after notified, we had a plan to pull down the house. But the more we get to know about Misawaya, the more we cannot do that because the house has 150 years history and has been watching people’s lives for a really long time. And also so many people have been supported to preserve it.

“What can we do for the house?”

Our family has been thinking for a long time for the answer. And also I have been thinking what to do. One thing I felt is that this house is very attractive and I would like to leave it.

In 2016, finally, I have decided I am going to use the house as a manager. Then our family started to renovate the house and make use of a cultural resource.

WHAT WE THINK

Our goal is to preserve the house for us, for the town, for future generations. The important thing is using resources as much as possible, because vacant houses are becoming a serious social issue these days in Japan where the population has decreased. So that we would like to use this property and create the place where people can gather.

We started off with small things such as cafe and some events in 2017. I'm getting feel that Misawaya is going to be a great spot to get people together.

There's no strong concept here yet. It is just really old house for now. So it still can be anything. We would like to hear your idea what you can do at this kominka. Then gradually, it is going to grow and be a comfortable place to stay in this Inadani area.

WHAT WE DID in 2017

Our first event was opening party in the end of June, 2017. Then we opend cafe and did some events until the end of October.

Started offering Fruit Kakigori(Japanese shaved ice).

Music Lives
Some artists came to Misawaya to sing.

Developed jam products with fruits from our farm.

We closed Misawaya in the end of October so that it is super cold during winter in Nagano. But we are planning to re-open cafe and event space in May 2018. I am sure it is going to be more interesting place next year. We are looking forward to your visit during the next open season:)
